From the issue of its legendary HD 580 headphone in mid-’90s, the German company has cornered the market on ultimate over-ear sound coupled with ultimate comfort, an unbeatable combination.

With no need to reinvent the wheel year in and year out, 2004′s titanium/silver-colored HD 650 is only the third top-of-the-line incarnation since the HD 580, following the classy HD 600 (and not counting Sennheiser’s made-to-order $15,000 Orpheus electrostatic headphone). Is each issue better than the last? Fundamentally, yes, though they’re also simply “different.” Taking as a starting point that each is truly excellent, the 580 might be said to focus on glorious midrange; the 600 makes a point of delivering extended, exceptionally airy high frequencies; and the 650, fittingly enough, tackles the most difficult area of sound for small drivers to handle: deep bass.

The 650 offers appreciable bass well below 40 Hz, the region responsible for the deepest frequencies generated by kick drums, timpani, double bass, electric bass guitar, and all manner of electronic sounds. Further, the 650 reproduces its low frequencies with only minimal emphasis in the upper-bass region, between the areas we commonly call “bass” and “midrange”, in which undue emphasis can destroy clarity both above and below.

If you listen mostly to classical, jazz, and acoustic music, you’ll probably embrace the headphone’s low-end authority without reservation. If you listen to contemporary pop/rock and electronica, however–genres subject to a fair amount of equalization and bass boosting over the course of recording, mixing, and mastering–then you might find yourself facing, at times, a bit too much bass. Of course, most rock demands excellent bass response, and the HD 650 delivers. It just isn’t forgiving of a musical production’s gross errors of judgment, which would makes it a great asset for sound engineers.

Sony MDR-NC60 Noise Canceling Headphone

- This is the most comfortable pair of cans I’ve ever tried. The overall fit is very comfortable – I was able to fall asleep on a 3 hour flight. There is absolutely no “suction” effect as I’ve experienced with another phones I’ve tried.
- Both, the cups and the bridge are wrapped up in very fine leather. I read some reviews that some people do not like leather on the headphones as it may cause sweating – I personally never experience that, not with this pair nor with any other headphones I’ve owned. So, even though I cannot say anything negative about that aspect, I might not be the best judge in this case – some people can be more sensitive then others. As far as leather quality and feel – they are as good as they come.
- The unique feature of this model is a “monitor” button that allows you to hear surrounding sounds without turning off the NC or taking the cans off. The only comfort comment I have about this model is that this button is hard to find for someone who’s just beginning to adjust to this set. As I’m getting used to this pair, though, I’m getting much better at it – minor problem with a design in my mind.
- This pair runs on a regular AAA battery, illuminating the need to carry a battery charger and having to worry about how to charge it in Europe. This is a big plus in my books. 1 AAA battery gives you 30 continuous hours of NC; if you think that it is not enough – just take a couple of spare AAAs with you – it is still better then a charger, and sure will be enough for a trip to any destination.
- Overall build is very sturdy, yet easy to adjust to whatever position is desirable. Folds neatly into a carrying case, and as far as “over-the-ear” designed go – do not take much space when folded. Again, if the portability is your main concern – you might want to check out “on-the-ear” designs.

There are many kinds of headphones and depending on what your needs are you have an easier decision on what kind you will actually need. There are five kinds of headphones: earbuds and in ear which stick in your ears, on ear which sit on top of your ears, over ear which cover your ears completely, wireless which are cordless, and finally headsets which add a microphone to the mix.

Earbuds and In Ear Headphones

Earbuds and in ear are great for commuters as the sound is in your ear and does not “leak” out to others around you. The real advantages are that these headphones are very very portable and kind of hidden within your ears. There are however drawbacks to these earbud style headphones. With a small size of headphone you will not have the big soundstage and range of sound that a larger speaker can give you. One of the biggest problems is that since these headphones sit inside your ear and this can be dangerous at large volumes leading to hearing problems in later life.

On Ear Headphones

These on ear type are a great type of headphone around the house. They will give great response and have a big range as well as the possibility of a very large soundstage. The drawback of the on ear headphone style is that since the sound is not blocked by anything much more sound can leak out and people around you can hear the music that you are listening to especially at higher volume.

Over Ear Headphones

Over the ear style are the kind that you are most used to seeing. These headphones cover your entire ear and are the kind that are most often noise cancelling. The sound on these headphones can not be beat and the lack of outside noise and the control of the sound by the manufacturer in making the sound perfect in your ear.
